Gripping The Golf Clubs

If you're interested in playing a good golf game. It is essentialto have a good golf grip. If you don't grip the club correctly, for instance if you grip it too tight you cause weak shots and most likely will slice the ball. Sporatic shots will ruin your golf game.

It would be nice if there was a exact science to choosing a golf grip, but there isn't. You need to know the different grips and practice and choose the grip that works best for you. Some golfers use a different grip, depending on the club they use, but most choose a grip that work for them and they go with it.

A Baseball Grip

The baseball grip is mostly used by beginning golfers, or golfers with joint pain, arthritis and people with smaller hands and wrists. This grip is also referred to as the 10 finger grip and is commonly used by instructors when teaching new students. It's the most natural grip. Who hasn't played baseball growing up?

In this grip the index finger of the left hand and the little finger of the right hand meet but do not overlap or interlock much like holding a baseball bat.

An Overlapping Golf Grip

The overlapping grip is the most commonly used golf grip. This grip is mostly used by male golfers and people with strong wrists and forearms. In this grip the little finger of the right hand lies on top of or overlaps the index finger on the left hand.

I use this grip but it took me some time to get use to it.

The Interlocking Grip

The interlocking grip is also used by beginning golfers, including golfers with weaker wrists and forearms who may have difficulty with the overlapping grip. In this grip the index finger of the left hand and the little finger of the right hand overlap each other and interlock.

Your Golf Grip

OK, now that you know the different types of golf grips, let's discuss the basic way to grip a golf club no matter which of the grips above that you decide to use. Begin by holding the club directly in front of you with your right hand. The club head should be pointing away from you at about a 45 degree angle.

Grip the club with your left hand. The club will be mainly in the palm of your hand across the pads at the base of your fingers. Be sure that the club is resting across the first section
of your index finger. Your thumb will be positioned straight on top of the golf club shaft. A quick way to check and see if you're holding the club properly is to look at your thumb; it should be in the twelve o'clock position.

Then, with your right hand, grip the golf club just above your left hand with the fingers, not the palm, of your right hand. The thumb will be positioned slightly off to the left. The thumb on
your right hand will be in an eleven o'clock position.

If you are gripping the golf club correctly, your first two knuckles on your left hand will be visible and your left thumb should be completely hidden under your right hand.

How tightly should you hold the club? This can make all the difference in the world and gripping properly will help you get straighter golf shots.

Here's a quick test so that you can tell whether or not you're holding the right amount of pressure.

When you're holding club it should feel like it could be almost pulled out of your hands, but not quite. A correct golf grip will make you feel as if you are holding the club mostly in the palm
and last three fingers of your left hand. Be sure to hold the club with the same amount of pressure in both hands. I can't guarantee that a proper grip can give you a perfect swing,
but I can tell you if you don't learn how to grip the club properly you will never achieve the results you are hoping for.
